Benue Governor Ortom Dumps APC, Joins PDP

After months of speculations on social media regarding his defection, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has officially announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ortom, according to a statement issued on Wednesday, July 25, by his Chief Press Secretary, Tever Akasa, has now joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

At a press conference today in Makurdi, the state capital, where he announced his resignation from the party, Ortom said he was leaving the APC due to the insincerity of the leaders of the party.

He said the APC had been hijacked by dictators adding that there is no chance for him to actualise his ambition within the party.

The announcement brings to an end months of speculation that the governor will return to the PDP as a result of his disagreement with leaders of the APC in Benue and at the national level.

His defection follows major political decisions in the state over the last three weeks, all of which had fuelled the speculations of his exit.

It also comes at a time when fifteen senators of the ruling party announced their defection to the opposition party.

In the same vein, a total of 37 members of the House of Representatives defected from Nigeria’s ruling party.

Of this number, 32 joined the PDP while four joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). One later announced he was also leaving the APC but did not state his new party.
